And Tom Cruise delivered one endorsement that hit Democrats like a freight train.
Tom Cruise Endorses the Paramount-WBD Merger
California Democrat Attorney General Rob Bonta led a coalition of 11 blue states filing suit to stop the Paramount-WBD merger after the Trump administration approved the $110 billion acquisition.
Bonta claimed the suit would destroy competition in Hollywood and cost jobs.
“The unlawful merger of these two entertainment behemoths would lead to higher prices, lower quality, and less content for film and television, harming movie theaters, basic cable distributors, and ultimately, audiences on every sofa and movie theater seat in the U.S.,” Bonta stated.
Tom Cruise, the man many consider the last real movie star in Hollywood, endorsed the deal in an appearance on the Pat McAfee show.
Cruise explained he supported the merger because Paramount CEO David Ellison pledged to release 30 theatrical releases a year, a big boon to the movie industry.
Why Cruise Endorsed the Merger
“I think it’s awesome,” Cruise stated. “You know, here’s the thing. They’re going to deliver 30 movies. It’s a community to me. It’s not an industry. The people in these studios are not just people in the studios. They’re my family. I know we’re going to get those 30 movies. I want us all to come together as a community to help make those 30 movies. It’s not just going to be, you know, Paramount doing it. Everyone’s going to need all the help of every artist to be able to do it.”
Cruise argued that 30 movie releases per year would help develop the next generation of actors and directors into stars.
“Like you can have these artists, all these greats, they got to cut their teeth and learn in the same way that you get to act, and you’re learning. It’s, you take it and the next one and the next one. Every single one of them,” Cruise added.
Cruise explained that without opportunities to make movies that appear on the big screen, the industry would miss out on the next Nolan or Spielberg.
“The Iñárritus, the Spielbergs, the Nolans, me — all the opportunities that I’ve had, I want that for every writer, every director, every producer, every artist. And the only way you do it is we have to create an abundance. Its production begets production,” Cruise continued.
Currently, studios plant their flag on a release weekend for a tentpole, and everyone else schedules around it.
Cruise reminisced about how in the 70s, 80s, and 9 multiple studios would release films on a given weekend so the audience had a chance to choose.
“I remember in the ’80s, ’90s, 2000s, you’d have five films opening on the weekend, and people [went] to the movie theaters,” Cruise recalled. “You see how audiences are enjoying that experience, but we got to make them… And we have to as a community. We’ve got to help each other to do it,” Cruise concluded.
A trial on the merger is set for March 2, 2027, and Tom Cruise just obliterated the Democrats’ case.
What This is Actually About
David Ellison’s father, Larry, is a Trump donor.
David also said he’s voted for candidates of both parties and holds views that are conservative and liberal.
And Democrats are really suing because WBD owns CNN and the Ellisons would get control of the network in the deal.
Bonta and his fellow leftist Attorneys General fear Ellison will end CNN’s run as a left-wing propaganda operation and Ellison’s stated plan to turn CNN into an actual news organization that plays it “down the middle.”
“Great news organizations like CNN and CBS News are here to tell it straight down the middle,” Ellison wrote in a New York Times op-ed. “That requires newsrooms that reflect the whole world, not one side of it.”
