Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez picked a fight with every parent who wants girls racing against girls.
Plenty of Democrats now whisper that the issue sinks them, but her Maine audience wasn’t in a whispering mood.
And AOC explained her position with one line so strange it had folks checking their hearing.
AOC Picks the Wrong Side of the Starting Line
The New York Congresswoman took the stage at More Perfect University, a left-wing campus program the advocacy outfit More Perfect Union launched in April 2026 to counter Turning Point USA. Maine’s Democrat Senate nominee, Troy Jackson, sat right next to her.
A University of Southern Maine student who identifies as transgender asked the big question of the night. The student said the Democrat Party had walked away from the cause and now treated it as a loser not worth defending.
And Ocasio-Cortez didn’t hesitate. “They’re wrong,” she said.
Then she went somewhere most Democrats facing voters won’t go. She warned that “the moment you try to compromise the rights of a trans person in America,” the rights of every other citizen go down the drain too.
The auditorium erupted.
But the real trouble started when she tried to explain herself. She claimed “trans Americans are about 1% of the population, perhaps less than 1%,” and accused the Right of pouring billions into an obsession with them. The student corrected her from the crowd by holding up three fingers.
Next came Title IX. “Title IX is the federal protection for all gender equality and all women to be protected,” Ocasio-Cortez said. She insisted that when conservatives talk about boys in girls’ sports, “it’s not just about trans girls in sports. It’s about girls, all girls.”
And then came the line that launched a thousand eye rolls.
“I support the rights of trans women because I’m a girls girl,” she said.
One user on X put it about as well as anyone could: “This is like saying, ‘I agree that 2+2=5 because I’m a mathy mathematician’.”
Nixon Never Signed a Gender Law
Plenty of grandparents reading this remember when the local high school didn’t bother fielding a girls’ basketball team at all. Title IX changed that.
Congress passed it in 1972, and President Richard Nixon signed it. The key sentence never mentions gender: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
Sex. One word, and it carried the whole load. Lawmakers wrote it because schools kept handing the gyms, the uniforms, and the scholarships to boys.
The Biden administration spent years trying to stretch that word to cover gender identity, and in 2024 it rolled out new Title IX rules to do exactly that. A federal judge in Kentucky tossed those rules in January 2025. President Trump signed his executive order keeping men out of women’s sports within weeks of returning to the White House.
So which side is really attacking Title IX? The one trying to redefine the law’s central word, or the one reading it the way Nixon signed it?
But AOC wasn’t done twisting the law. She tied the whole fight to campus sexual assault. “Understand, when they attack trans girls in sports, they’re also attacking all women’s ability to stand up against their abusers, their rapists, and their assaulters on campuses across America,” she said.
Keeping a boy off the starting line of a girls’ race has nothing to do with rape. Lumping the two together cheapens what actual victims go through.
Thirteen Girls Gave Their Own Answer
Clear across the country, the girls AOC claims to champion already spoke up, and they didn’t need a microphone.
At Camas High School in southwest Washington, a runner who opened the season on the boys’ team switched to the girls’ team partway through. In a boys’ junior varsity race on September 5, that runner placed 76th out of 301, according to published results. By September 29, the same runner won a girls’ varsity meet against Union High School.
The girls on the team drew the obvious conclusion. At a dual meet against Battle Ground in October, thirteen of them linked arms, walked off the course, and forfeited rather than race. Two runners from Skyview High had already stepped off the course at a September meet against Camas.
The school district says it follows rules from the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, which let students compete according to how they identify. The district also moved the league championship meet onto its own property over security concerns.
WNBA star Sophie Cunningham, who has caught plenty of grief for standing up for fair competition, cheered the protesters with three words: “Good work girls.”
But the Washington fight isn’t settled. Voters there decide Initiative 638 in November, a measure that would limit girls’ K-12 school sports to biological girls.
Every League Faces the Same Two Doors
Democrats keep hunting for a middle path. It doesn’t exist.
Any league, school board, or legislature faces a binary choice. Ban biological males from girls’ competition, and the institution concedes that identity can’t change sex, which knocks the legs out from under the entire transgender claim. Let them in, and girls’ sports stop being girls’ sports, because any coach chasing a trophy has every reason to recruit boys willing to identify as girls.
Hormone thresholds, case-by-case reviews, and eligibility panels don’t fix anything. They just hand some bureaucrat the job of deciding how much unfairness a sixteen-year-old girl ought to swallow.
And the toll keeps climbing. OutKick highlighted new research finding that transgender athletes have taken 2,293 championship spots from biological women.
AOC’s 1% number seems to cut against her, too. If biological males in girls’ sports are that rare, a clean ban would cost her side almost nothing. Then again, rarity was never the point. One runner in Camas was enough to send half a team off the course.
The public made up its mind a while ago. A New York Times poll found 79 percent of Americans said trans women should not compete in women’s sports. In Maine, a University of New Hampshire poll showed 64 percent of residents said transgender athletes shouldn’t play in girls’ and women’s sports.
And Maine knows this fight better than most states. When Democrat Governor Janet Mills and state officials refused to follow Trump’s executive order, Trump sued Maine in April 2025, with Attorney General Pam Bondi announcing the case alongside former college swimmer Riley Gaines.
That’s the state where AOC delivered her “girls girl” line. The room applauded anyway.
A Promise She Already Broke on Stage
Ocasio-Cortez gets talked up as a possible 2028 Presidential contender. Whatever she decides, she now owns this answer on tape.
She closed by vowing that Democrats won’t “shred our Constitution, kill Title IX” to go after a sliver of the population. Funny choice of words from someone who had just spent several minutes rewriting the law’s most important word for a cheering crowd.
AOC called herself a girls girl in Maine. In Camas, thirteen actual girls linked arms and walked off a cross-country course to tell the world what they thought of boys in their races.
