Nancy Pelosi’s mouth wrote a check the Democrat Party may not be able to cash.

If it backfires, Pelosi will leave Congress in utter humiliation.

Pelosi Sets the Bar for 2026 House Gains

All the experts say Democrats winning a majority in the House of Representatives is baked into the cake for the 2026 midterm election.

After all, Democrats only need to flip three seats in the House to seize control, and that is far below the historical average number of seats the party out of power picks up in a midterm contest.

Mainly due to high gas prices resulting from the Iran War, the Real Clear Politics polling average shows Democrats holding a 6.4% lead over Republicans on the congressional generic ballot question of which party Americans want to see in charge.

Pelosi was certainly feeling her oats when she declared her goal was to see Democrats crush Republicans in a blue wave and gain 30 seats in the House.

“I’d rather see 10 times that, like 30, but I’ll take more. Thirty is my goal,” Pelosi crowed at the POLITICO summit in Sacramento.

The Red State Standing in the Way

Pelosi was giddy with excitement over what she perceived the state of play to be in 2026

But she forgot about Florida.

CNN data guru Harry Enten ran the numbers and found that the Sunshine State could throw a monkey wrench in the Democrats’ plans because Florida shifted from the ultimate swing state- George W. Bush’s 538-vote margin handed him the Presidency in 2000- to a ruby-red bastion.

Enten noted that ten years ago, Democrats held a three-point edge over Republicans in voter registration.

“It’s no longer a purple state. It’s a red state now, and you can see it right here. Okay, the Florida party registration edge, you know, you go back to 2016, when Hillary Clinton was quite competitive, Democrats led in party registration in Florida by 3 points,” Enten stated.

Thanks to Governor Ron DeSantis rejecting Faucism during the COVID pandemic, Trump’s agenda, and Democrats racing to embrace socialism, Florida completely flipped, and now Republicans command an 8-point voter registration advantage.

“Look at where we are now though, and look at where we are in 2024. In 2024, by the time that Donald Trump was easily winning another term in the White House in Florida, winning that state, look at this, it was Republican plus 8. Now it is Republican plus 11 points,” Enten continued.

That massive partisan advantage could come into play this November, as Enten noted that the new Congressional map Florida Republicans just enacted netted the GOP three new congressional seats.

Redistricting is the Wild Card

“You can see it in the House ratings as well. Now there was a redistricting that happened in Florida, but it’s just part of, again, a larger trend of Republicans continuously doing well in Florida and actually doing better over time. Take a look here, U.S. House seats in Florida, GOP pickups this year, we’re talking about two to three seats possible. Two to three seats possible, again, aided by redistricting, but no doubt part of a larger trend of Florida moving further and further to the right. Now here’s the real problem though with Florida moving further and further to the right, right? We’re not just talking about a state like Wyoming that has only three electoral votes,” Enten concluded.

Any seats Republicans gain in redistricting create a buffer for their Congressional majority.

If Republicans defy history on November 3, Florida will be the reason.
