Rep. Ilhan Omar has spent years telling Americans they cannot be trusted with firearms.
Now police have raided her own son’s apartment and hauled out weapons and ammunition.
And when reporters tried to ask her about it, Omar kept walking like they weren’t even there.
What Happened at the Minneapolis Apartment
Minneapolis police executed a search warrant in late August on the apartment where Omar’s 20-year-old son, Adnan Hirsi, lives with his 22-year-old roommate, Abdulrahman Abdi, according to Fox News reporting.
The whole chain of events started with a routine traffic stop. Abdi was pulled over and found to have no driver’s license and no proof of insurance. Police released him, but impounded the car. A firearm was later discovered, and because Abdi is a convicted felon, it is illegal for him to possess one. That finding triggered the search warrant on the shared apartment.
When officers executed that warrant, they found multiple weapons and ammunition inside the home.
Abdi was arrested and faces a weapons charge. He was released a day after his arrest. His record is not exactly thin: he has been arrested ten times before and carries a felony speeding conviction from 2024 stemming from an arrest for driving more than 100 miles per hour.
Adnan Hirsi has not been charged with any crime, and neither has Omar herself. But the fact that her son was sharing living quarters with a man who allegedly had illegal firearms in their home raised immediate questions that reporters wanted answered.
Omar answered none of them.
The Silence That Says Everything
When a reporter tried to get Omar on the record about the raid, she kept walking. Her office did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment either.
That silence is worth sitting with for a moment, because Omar is not someone who typically struggles to find things to say.
She has built a legislative career around the idea that guns are a menace and that ordinary Americans need more restrictions placed on their ability to own and carry them. She has pushed hard to close the gun show loophole and has been a vocal advocate for “red flag” laws designed to temporarily block individuals deemed a threat to public safety from accessing firearms. She has voted for legislation targeting so-called assault-style weapons and expanded background checks.
And yet, when police found multiple weapons and ammunition in the apartment her own son shares with a man who has been arrested ten times and is legally barred from possessing a firearm, Omar had nothing to say. Not a word.
The contrast is not subtle. A congresswoman who campaigns relentlessly on keeping guns out of dangerous hands went stone silent the moment dangerous hands allegedly turned up in her son’s home.
Rules for Thee, Not for the Omar Family
This is the part of the story that goes beyond the legal specifics and into something that should genuinely bother people.
The gun control movement in Washington, DC operates on a simple premise: that the average American cannot be trusted to make responsible decisions about firearms, and therefore the government must step in and restrict those decisions. Omar has been one of the loudest voices making that argument in Congress.
But the gun laws she champions are not aimed at the Ilhan Omars of the world. They are aimed at the rest of the country. Law-abiding gun owners in rural Minnesota who have never been arrested once. Hunters. Concealed carry permit holders. Small business owners who keep a firearm behind the counter for protection. Those are the people who bear the weight of the restrictions Omar pushes.
Abdulrahman Abdi, by contrast, was already legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. Every existing law on the books already covered him. And yet, according to the reporting, weapons and ammunition allegedly turned up in the home he shares with Omar’s son anyway.
That is not an argument for more gun laws. It is an argument against the premise that more gun laws would have changed anything here at all.
And the fact that Omar refuses to engage with any of this publicly is telling. She is not in a position to explain it. There is no explanation that helps her politically, so she chose silence instead.
That is a choice. But it is not a neutral one.
Politicians who demand accountability from everyone else tend to get uncomfortable when the accountability spotlight swings back in their direction. Omar has spent years demanding that gun owners justify themselves, register their weapons, submit to more background checks, and accept restrictions on what they can own. The moment a reporter asked her to justify what was allegedly found in her own family’s home, she had nothing.
The people who bear the cost of Omar’s gun control agenda are not her son’s roommate. They are the law-abiding gun owners she has spent her career treating as the problem. And they are watching.
