A Plan to Use Tactical Nuclear Weapons in a War Against Russia and China
The Pentagon is always wargaming and drawing contingency plans for contingencies.
China and Russia are America’s top geopolitical adversaries, and the Pentagon is preparing in case of a war with Russia in Europe and with China over Taiwan.
In that event, Pentagon Policy Chief Elbridge Colby is overseeing new plans to use tactical nuclear weapons in the event America comes into conflict with Russia and China.
“The Pentagon is drafting a new nuclear weapons strategy to prepare for a potential conflict with China or Russia, marking a significant shift in US military tactics.
The strategy, overseen by Elbridge Colby, the Pentagon’s policy chief, would place greater emphasis on shorter-range tactical nuclear weapons in the event of a regional war, rather than relying on long-range strategic missiles,’ the Telegraph reports.
The Washington Post and other outlets reported America depleted its long-range missile supply in the War with Iran.
This story appearing in the press about the Pentagon drawing up new plans to deploy battlefield nukes, which are lower in yield, is likely a signal to both China and Russia that they shouldn’t think America running low on long-range missiles is an excuse for them to launch surprise attacks on the Baltic states or Taiwan.
“Our view is that we need credible nuclear options,” a U.S. official said of the plan.
The goal was to “expand the president’s option space by providing him with realistic and credible options and therefore strengthen deterrence.”
Why Tactical Nukes
No nation has deployed nuclear weapons since America dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Colby believes America’s nuclear deterrent suffered because America’s military doctrine calls for launching strategic missiles designed to wipe out adversaries’ nuclear forces and obliterate entire cities.
The use of these weapons is unthinkable, so Colby sought to draw up a nuclear posture that an enemy would credibly fear would lead to an American nuclear response.
“If you actually want extended deterrence to be credible, you have to provide the nation’s political leadership with nuclear capabilities that common sense indicates you could actually use,” the official added.
“Otherwise you’re reducing our leadership’s options to extreme choices that the adversary won’t find credible – and that is not going to fare well for deterrence,’ the official continued.
President Trump has long warned of nuclear weapons as the greatest threat to humanity.
Trump isn’t looking to start a nuclear war.
But the President wants a nuclear strategy in place that will place credible fear in the hearts of America’s enemies, so no one even thinks of attempting to start a nuclear war.
