Meghan Markle’s half-brother took his own father to the feds, and the old man cried betrayal.
London police had sat on similar claims for seven years without telling a single American agency.
And Kash Patel’s agents just followed one monthly autopay bill straight to the answer.
The Son Nobody Wanted to Believe Just Got Some Backup
Federal agents arrested Thomas Markle Sr near Tampa, Florida, on a criminal complaint that charges him with one count of possession of child pornography.
Prosecutors expected the 82-year-old to make his first appearance in the US District Court for the Middle District of Florida soon after agents took him into custody.
The father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, denies every word of it. “I’m shocked, I’m hurt and I’m very upset that my son is making these accusations against me,” he told the Daily Mail before the arrest. “I could never do what I’m being accused of. It’s the worst thing anyone could accuse me of.”
A complaint is an accusation. Markle Sr stays innocent unless prosecutors prove their case in court.
But the son he blamed just got some serious company.
Thomas Markle Jr, 60, told The Sun that he found “hundreds, if not thousands” of child sexual abuse images in boxes while clearing out his father’s former home in the Philippine city of Cebu. He says he took what he found to police in the Philippines and then reached out to the FBI.
Few people would make that call about their own father. And Thomas Jr made it knowing the royal press has long lumped him in with the rest of Meghan’s feuding relatives.
Eighteen Years of Rent on Two Locked Doors
Here’s the twist almost nobody expected. The federal charge doesn’t center on Cebu at all.
According to the Justice Department, FBI agents searched two storage units in the Los Angeles area that Markle Sr has rented since 2008. Both units stayed paid up the whole time, with automatic payments going through as recently as October.
Inside, agents seized roughly 78 items, including slides, film negatives, and books that prosecutors say contain suspected child sexual abuse material.
Anybody who ever caught an episode of Storage Wars knows how a forgotten locker usually ends. The renter stops paying, the manager cuts the lock, and an auctioneer rolls up the door for a crowd of bargain hunters.
Autopay meant that door never had to open for anybody.
First Assistant US Attorney Bill Essayli laid out the government’s case without any throat-clearing. “Mr Markle is accused of possessing child sexual abuse material, including photographs depicting himself with minor girls,” Essayli said. “These allegations are extremely serious, and we will prosecute Mr Markle to the fullest extent of federal law.”
If a jury convicts him, Markle Sr faces up to 20 years in federal prison. He suffered a stroke in the Philippines earlier this year, and doctors amputated his left leg, a setback that sent him back to the United States, according to the Associated Press.
Kash Patel’s FBI Didn’t Let the Tip Gather Dust
When the story first broke in October, the FBI kept its cards close. A spokesperson said only that the Bureau knew about the allegations, would help the authorities in the Philippines, and would look into any related violations of US law.
But plenty of folks figured that meant months of paperwork and a polite shrug.
Instead, Patel’s agents found the units and made an arrest within a matter of weeks. “Working with our Justice Department partners, our agents moved quickly, identified and located the explicit material, and arrested Mr Markle in Florida,” Patel said. He added that “any predator who targets children will have zero safe haven in this country or anywhere they try to hide.”
But the most telling line came from Patrick Grandy, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office.
“This case highlights the importance of the involvement of the public, even if it’s a family member or close friend, to be vigilant and speak up if they have information on individuals they suspect may be preying on and exploiting our children,” Grandy said.
Grandy left Thomas Jr’s name out of it. Anyone who has followed this family’s long-running soap opera can fill in the blank.
A London Letter Landed on the Wrong Desk
Now compare that to how Scotland Yard handled a warning it received years earlier.
The Metropolitan Police says a letter arrived in January 2019 that claimed to raise security concerns about the Duchess of Sussex. According to the Met, it actually held “a number of claims about alleged offending outside the United Kingdom.”
The Met’s Protection Commander, Adam Slonecki, owned up to what happened next. “The letter was assessed and subsequently passed to the office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for their awareness. The details of the allegations in the letter were not shared with other law enforcement agencies,” Slonecki said.
So officers handed claims about alleged crimes against children to a royal couple’s staff and to no other police force anywhere. The Met has now referred its own conduct to the Independent Office for Police Conduct and promised to pass the allegations to overseas agencies, roughly seven years late.
Meghan tells the story a little differently. She dates the letter to 2018, says it “was subsequently shared with me,” and says she “was given assurances that these were being investigated.”
But by the Met’s own account, no other police agency ever saw those details. Whoever made those assurances, no investigator in America or the Philippines had the file.
Meghan says she kept her children away from her father “for one reason: to protect them,” and that she “trusted that the authorities were doing the same for other families.” Nobody faults a mother for guarding Archie and Lilibet. Still, neither her statement nor the Met’s account mentions anyone in the Sussex camp passing those claims along to American authorities.
Instead, the break came from a half-brother cleaning out his dad’s old house who decided to pick up the phone.
Three Countries, One Unanswered Question
The case now stretches across three countries. Federal prosecutors in California hold the charge, while the authorities in the Philippines still have whatever Thomas Jr turned over in Cebu.
And the British police watchdog will decide whether anybody at the Met answers for routing that letter to a royal household instead of a detective.
Markle Sr will get his day in court, and his lawyers will get every chance to fight the charge. That’s how American justice works. And it should.
But nobody in London has yet explained who decided, back in January 2019, that a letter containing claims about alleged crimes against children belonged with a royal couple’s staff instead of a police investigator.
