Senate Majority Leader John Thune is the man holding up the SAVE Act in the Senate.
The SAVE Act is the centerpiece of President Trump’s election integrity agenda.
And John Thune broke some awful news to Sean Hannity that Trump is going to hate.
President Trump continues to call on Senate Republicans to eliminate the filibuster to end the obstruction blocking the SAVE Act.
Thune is hiding behind the fact that Democrats won’t provide the votes to end debate and pass the bill as the reason the SAVE Act isn’t heading to President Trump’s desk.
But Republicans are the majority in the Senate and can change the rules to eliminate the filibuster.
Trump wanted that if Republicans don’t abolish the filibuster to pass the SAVE Act, Democrats will win the 2026 and 2028 elections and eliminate the filibuster so they can impose a series of power grabs that will ensure they never lose another election again.
“The all Republican Senators! Terminate the Filibuster, which the Democrats will do as soon as they get the chance, and PASS THE SAVE AMERICA ACT, and everything else, including the Budget, and upcoming Debt Ceiling. Do it now, before it is too late!!!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Passing the SAVE Act, which would mandate all states require proof of citizenship to register to vote and ID to cast a ballot, took on added importance after a bombshell from New Jersey revealed that 6,600 noncitizens were on the voter rolls.
Trump’s pleas are falling on deaf ears as Thune refuses to act on ending the filibuster.
In an interview with Sean Hannity, Thune claimed he was merely a helpless bystander in this entire affair.
“Getting rid of the filibuster — nonstarter? You don’t have the votes?” Hannity asked Thune.
Thune readily agreed and claimed that the lack of Republican votes was preventing him from terminating the filibuster.
“Well, we don’t. And I’ve actually — I’ve had this conversation with the president many times, I think as you know.
I actually suggested at one point that they — his team come up and sit down and visit with some of my colleagues. So they came up, about twenty Republican senators, and fifteen were a no on getting rid of the filibuster. The votes aren’t there to do it.
I know he thinks he can persuade people, but there are a lot of folks who are very — this is a hard position for a lot of Senate Republicans,” Thune told Hannity.
But Thune’s job is Majority Leader.
It’s up to him to figure out how to lead, and in this case that means determining how to round up the votes to end the filibuster so Senate Republicans can send the SAVE Act to President Trump’s desk for signature.
