Ted Cruz Plots to Make 2028 All About Israel
Texas Senator Ted Cruz still harbors Presidential ambitions.
“It’s no secret that I want to be president,” Cruz told Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick on his podcast.
And even though President Trump has reportedly settled on Vice President JD Vance as his successor, The Wall Street Journal reports that Cruz is asking around to political operatives about working on his 2028 campaign.
The only lane Cruz is picking to attack Vance is over foreign policy, specifically Israel.
For over a year, Cruz smeared podcaster Tucker Carlson as an anti-Semite because Carlson is close friends with Vance, and Cruz plans to center his campaign message around Vance tolerating a rise of anti-Semitism in the GOP, and an unwillingness to fight regime change wars in the Middle East.
“Those who are anti-Israel quickly become anti-capitalist and anti-American,” Cruz ranted to reporters about Carlson. “Tucker’s obsession is unhealthy and dangerous.”
The Washington Post reported that “Cruz has criticized Vance, a close ally of Carlson, to Republican donors, according to two people familiar with the comments. The senator has warned that Vance’s foreign policy views are dangerously isolationist, the people said. (Vance has been one of the GOP’s most prominent skeptics of U.S. intervention abroad.)”
Cruz also attacked the memorandum of understanding that Vance negotiated at President Trump’s behest to pause the Iran war for 60 days as “a terrible deal” that “JD negotiated.”
Vance Responds
Polls of GOP primary voters show that Vance is far and away the 2028 frontrunner even without Trump’s official endorsement.
Cruz barely registers in the single digits.
Vance previously swiped back at Cruz’s false claim that anti-Semitism was taking over, saying it was “slanderous” to accuse the conservative base of being filled with anti-Semites.
It’s “kind of slanderous to say that the Republican Party, the conservative movement, is extremely antisemitic,” Vance wrote on X.
Vance responded to another user by explaining that just because you opposed the policies of the Israeli government, it doesn’t make you an anti-Semite.
“I would say there’s a difference between not liking Israel (or disagreeing with a given Israeli policy) and anti-semitism,” Vance added.
Trump pollster Tony Fabrizio ridiculed the idea of Cruz running in 2028 by pointing out that given his lack of support with the Trump base, his only option was to challenge Vance as the candidate of Never Trumpers.
“I find this so amusing. @tedcruz maybe a great Senator for TX, but hard to see what his lane is in 2028. Him taking swipes at @JDVance tells me he plans to run as the anti-MAGA/Anti America First candidate,” Fabrizio posted on X.
A reporter asked Vance about Cruz taking swipes at him and building a 2028 Presidential campaign.
Vance explained that his only focus, and the only focus of every Republican, should be preserving the majorities in Congress this November.
“That’s an innovative way to ask the question,” Vance remarked. “But I’m still not gonna take the bait. Let me look. First of all, I’d encourage any Republican, if you care about the country, and I think all of us do, you should be focused not on a job a few years from now. You should be focused on the midterms. And that’s the approach that I’ve taken. I think people sometimes don’t believe me because they assume you’re the vice president; you must think about this all the time. What I’m focused on, man, is trying to get as many Republicans elected as possible so that we can do as much good as possible for the second two years of the Trump administration.”
But Vance didn’t let the pitch sail by entirely without taking a swing.
Vance quipped that Cruz would do well in 2028 because he was so “authentic and likable,” an allusion to a joke Trump advisor Roger Stone always tells that people take an instant dislike to Cruz when they meet him because it saves time.
“And on Ted Cruz, I mean, look, man, he’s just clearly– Ted is a very authentic and likable guy, and I’m sure he’ll do great,” Vance concluded.
