Ever since he took office for his second term, the establishment has mocked President Donald Trump for one of his biggest ideas.
They called it a joke, a distraction, an old man’s fantasy.
Now Trump has locked down something nobody in Washington thought was possible.
Trump Secures Permanent Arctic Security Rights
President Donald Trump’s announcement on Friday afternoon that the United States will have permanent security rights over Greenland is yet another vindication of his ability to deliver results for the American people.
Trump broke the news himself, posting the details directly to Truth Social rather than letting the State Department or the press filter the message first.
Trump wrote that at his direction, the administration worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will forever have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America.
He didn’t stop there.
Trump added that from now on, no US adversary can ever have a base in Greenland, have a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland, without express written approval from the United States.
That single line shuts the door on Communist China and Russia both, and it does so permanently rather than through some temporary lease arrangement that a future administration could unwind.
Trump also confirmed the US will move fast on the military side, saying the country will immediately begin the process of developing a large Military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland, of which there are many.
Trump’s post continued that the United States will work with the people of Greenland in its development and construction, and that this solution is a great one for the United States of America, Denmark, Greenland, and all of our Allies.
He closed with a promise that reads like a man who knows he just won.
Trump wrote that he looks forward to working with the wonderful people of Denmark and Greenland toward a magnificent future with respect to this large, and highly strategic, parcel of land, and that the United States will be very protective of it.
The deal was confirmed by the governments of Denmark and Greenland, with the formal agreement expected to be signed at the United Nations’ General Assembly next week in New York City.
The Skeptics Said It Would Never Happen
Rewind to Trump’s first year back in the Oval Office and the coverage of this issue looked nothing like it does today.
Dating back to his first term, Trump stressed the importance of Greenland as it related to Arctic security, and the matter remained a priority when he returned to the White House in 2025.
But the press treated the idea as a punchline for months.
After his return to the White House, Trump had called on Denmark to sell the island to the US, while insisting Greenland is crucial for US security.
And Trump raised eyebrows across Europe when he pointedly wouldn’t rule out taking the island by military force, even though Denmark is a NATO ally of the US.
Denmark and Greenland pushed back hard at the time.
Denmark and Greenland repeatedly said the island is not for sale and condemned reports of the US gathering intelligence there.
Russia wasn’t quiet about it either.
The US push for Greenland was also fiercely opposed by Russia and much of Europe.
None of that stopped the outcome that landed on Friday.
Trump got permanent security control without spending a dollar to buy the island outright, and he got it while keeping Denmark and Greenland as cooperative partners rather than adversaries.
That’s not the outcome the foreign policy commentariat predicted when Trump first floated the idea.
What Does This Mean For The Bigger Picture?
This fits a pattern that America First voters have watched play out again and again since Trump returned to office.
He states a goal that sounds impossible or reckless to the Washington press corps, gets mocked for months, and then delivers anyway.
Whether it is passing the largest tax cut for American families in history or removing the fraudulent dictator in Venezuela, betting against President Trump continues to be unwise.
The Greenland outcome matters strategically far beyond the headlines about an odd real estate obsession.
Communist China has spent years trying to buy influence across the Arctic through mining deals, research partnerships, and infrastructure investment, using the same playbook it has run in Africa and Latin America to buy loyalty one contract at a time.
Locking Beijing and Moscow out of Greenland by written agreement removes an entire theater from that competition before it can even start.
It also reinforces something the neoconservative wing of the old Republican Party never seemed to grasp: strength and diplomacy aren’t opposites.
Trump got the security outcome he wanted without a shot fired and without a single American soldier’s life put at risk, which stands in sharp contrast to the foreign policy disasters that establishment voices in both parties dragged the country through for the past two decades.
Critics spent months insisting that even bringing up Greenland would wreck the NATO alliance and humiliate the United States on the world stage.
Instead Denmark and Greenland signed on, and the alliance is intact.
Voters who sent Trump back to Washington in 2024 didn’t do it because they wanted more of the same foreign policy establishment thinking that produced decades of stalemates and failed interventions.
They wanted results, and Greenland is one more item on a growing list of promises kept.
The formal signing at the United Nations next week will make it official, but the outcome is already clear.
Trump identified a strategic vulnerability, took heat from every direction for saying so out loud, and closed the deal anyway.
