Democrats lecture Christians every election season about keeping faith out of politics.

That rule vanished the moment Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez needed a room full of organizers ahead of the midterms.

And what she told a hand-picked crowd inside a Catholic parish gave away the number her party is chasing across New York.

A Syracuse Parish Became a Campaign Office for an Afternoon

US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) recently stood at the front of All Saints Church on the east side of Syracuse, New York, and ran what amounted to a turnout rally.

Breitbart News described the gathering as “private.” The Daily Orange, Syracuse University’s student paper, called the audience “hand-picked” and reported that it included local politicians, members of the Syracuse chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, and the New York Working Families Party.

So an openly Marxist organization got a seat in the pews of a Catholic church. That detail drew almost no attention.

WRVO reported that Ocasio-Cortez used the stop to roll out something she calls “Project Reactivation,” a campaign aimed at 100,000 inactive Democrat voters across New York. Syracuse closed out a three-city upstate swing that also hit Ithaca and Buffalo, according to Central Current.

She told the crowd that Democrats “cannot take our House seats for granted.”

And then she spelled out the strategy. “The goal here is not just persuasion from conservative voters, but electorate expansion,” she said.

The ICE Applause Line and the “Cynics” She Blamed

Ocasio-Cortez spent a good part of her time praising the congregation for fighting Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The community had rallied to push for the release of two people ICE detained.

“The power of community organizing and coming together to ensure that when this community stood up to ICE,” she said, “we’ve been able to protect our community and keep us together.”

But she saved her sharpest words for the people she holds responsible for Democrat troubles. She warned that “people” and “cynics” want to “demobilize a people’s movement.”

Their weapon, in her telling, is “cynical narratives from the right, that we are divided, to make us turn against our immigrant brothers and sisters, our trans brothers and sisters and neighbors and siblings, and divide us along every line imaginable.”

Breitbart’s Hannah Knudsen pointed out that Ocasio-Cortez drew no line between legal immigrants and illegal aliens. A sign hanging in the church says “immigrants” and “refugees” are welcome.

This is also the parish that held a “pride mass” over the summer and declared the rainbow a “beautiful” symbol of God’s diversity. Genesis 9:11 says something else. God set the rainbow in the sky as His promise never again to destroy the earth by flood.

Zeale News reported that the Diocese of Syracuse has not said whether it signed off on the appearance.

What “Electorate Expansion” Tells Voters About the Left’s Playbook

Start with the obvious. Ocasio-Cortez went to a church because she needed bodies, clipboards, and a building.

And she has done it before. At the National Baptist Convention in Orlando, Florida, she borrowed the language of the Gospels to sell redistricting. “We said we must have the faith of a mustard seed. We must organize anyway,” she said. “One year later, out of nowhere, a judge strikes down Utah’s map and they are ordered to redraw. And it is only because of the organizing that we did in faith when there was no evidence.”

She told that crowd she had been “amazed watching how God works.”

A court redrawing a congressional map is many things. A miracle is a stretch.

Scripture does not call for big government, and it does not treat a judge’s order as answered prayer. It affirms the created distinction between male and female, and it presents marriage as the union of one man and one woman. A politician who champions abortion-on-demand and gender ideology, then reaches for the mustard seed when a House seat is in play, is using the Bible selectively. Christians in the pews can tell the difference between a sermon and a sales pitch.

But the bigger story sits in those two words she chose. Electorate expansion.

In fairness, Project Reactivation targets registered Democrats who stopped showing up. WRVO quoted her telling the room that “all you need to do to get out of that risk of being purged is to vote just once.” That is ordinary turnout work.

Still, look at what shared the stage with it. Applause for blocking ICE. No distinction between people who came legally and people who broke the law to get here. A party that wants amnesty for illegal aliens has a long-term interest in changing who votes, and it gets hard to hear “electorate expansion” as only a door-knocking program when the same speech celebrates stopping deportations. Maybe that reads too much into one phrase. She picked the phrase.

President Trump won a mandate in 2024 to enforce immigration law, and the polling has held. A Cygnal survey of 1,004 likely 2026 voters found 61 percent support deporting illegal aliens to their home countries against 34 percent opposed, and 58 percent oppose defunding ICE. A Harvard CAPS/Harris poll from the spring of 2026 found 56 percent of registered voters back deporting everyone in the country illegally.

So when Ocasio-Cortez blames “cynical narratives from the right” for splitting her coalition, she skips the simpler explanation. Voters looked at open borders and gender ideology and said no. Nobody tricked them.

And notice who never gets a lecture here. For decades the Left invoked the 1954 Johnson Amendment whenever a conservative pastor so much as mentioned an election. A socialist-friendly rally inside a Catholic parish draws a shrug from the same crowd.

There’s an old line about politicians showing up in church only when they need something. Ocasio-Cortez needed 100,000 voters.

Expect more of it. CNN reported earlier this year that she is weighing a 2028 run for President or for the Senate seat Chuck Schumer holds, and that the mustard seed line has become a regular feature of her speeches. The pulpit tour looks less like faith and more like a road test.
