The Democrat Party has a far-left problem it refuses to admit out loud.

One of its own lifelong loyalists just said the quiet part at full volume.

And what this insider told Democrats about the DSA’s radical agenda is going to sting for a while.

A Party Insider Breaks From the Script

Chris Matthews spent decades as one of the most recognizable faces in Democrat-friendly media. He hosted Hardball on MSNBC for years and never made much of a secret about where his loyalties lay politically.

So when Matthews goes on television and tells his own party to clean house, it’s worth paying attention.

Matthews recently appeared on Morning Joe and made the case that Democrats need to put real distance between themselves and the Democratic Socialists of America, the openly Marxist organization that has steadily expanded its influence inside the party’s left flank.

“Separate yourself from the DSA crap,” Matthews said flatly.

Matthews warned that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was leading Democrats to electoral doom by urging the party to embrace Democrat Socialist candidates.

“I like AOC generally, but she came out and said, we’re just a big tent party. Well, the problem with big tent defense is every Democrat has to defend all this crap coming from the left,” Matthews stated.

What the DSA Actually Stands For

It’s worth being clear about what Matthews is asking Democrats to separate from, because the media rarely spells it out.

The DSA is not a progressive advocacy group with some edgy ideas. Its own platform calls for government seizure of major corporations, the abolition of the US Senate, replacement of the presidency and Supreme Court with bodies subordinate to Congress, the abolition of ICE, an end to all deportations, and the construction of a classless society. Those are not fringe interpretations of the platform. That is the platform.

That is textbook Marxism dressed up in the language of democratic participation, and it has found a comfortable home inside the Democrat Party’s activist infrastructure.

Matthews, to his credit, isn’t pretending otherwise.

But here’s where it gets complicated. Matthews is a self-described moderate who spent years accommodating the same forces he now wants Democrats to denounce. The left wing of the party didn’t materialize overnight. It grew because party insiders tolerated it, funded it, and in many cases celebrated it when the energy was useful. Calling it “crap” now, after it has become an electoral liability, is a little like a homeowner complaining about the termites after they’ve been eating the walls for a decade.

The Bigger Warning Democrats Are Ignoring

Matthews also pushed Democrats to do more to appeal to working-class voters, a group the party has been hemorrhaging for years.

And that’s the real story here. The DSA’s agenda, government control of industry, open borders, abolishing the institutions that protect individual liberty, is not popular with the voters Democrats need to win back. Working-class Americans, the people who built this country with their hands and their labor, did not sign up for a Marxist transformation of the American economy. They want jobs, affordable energy, safe streets, and a government that stays out of their way.

The 2024 election results made that clear enough. President Trump won a decisive mandate from exactly those voters, and Democrats are still arguing about whether the problem is messaging or whether they just need to push the socialist agenda harder.

Matthews is saying the problem is the agenda itself. Or at least the company the party keeps.

Whether his fellow Democrats listen is another question entirely. The party’s activist base, the people who knock on doors and write the checks, are not moderate. They are not interested in distancing themselves from the DSA. They are the DSA, or close enough to it that the distinction doesn’t matter much at the ballot box.

And the party’s elected officials know that picking a fight with the socialist wing carries real costs. You lose the volunteers. You lose the small-dollar donors. You lose the social media energy. So most of them don’t pick the fight. They perform moderation for swing-state audiences and then vote with the left when it matters.

That’s the pattern Matthews has been part of for a long time, which makes his current warning credible as a diagnosis and less credible as a prescription. He knows the disease because he watched it spread. But the people who could actually stop it have too much invested in the status quo to do what he’s describing.

The DSA’s influence inside the Democrat Party didn’t happen because nobody noticed. It happened because too many people who noticed decided it wasn’t their problem yet.

Now it is. And one of the party’s most recognizable voices is admitting it on morning television.

Whether that changes anything, or whether it just becomes another cable news moment that everyone agrees with and nobody acts on, is the question worth watching.
