The timing couldn’t be worse for Democrats.
Democrats can’t afford any missteps with the midterm elections so close.
And a Democrat sex scandal just went from bad to worse over this damning letter.
House Ethics Committee Announces Investigation into Democrat Congressman
The House Ethics Committee announced that California Democrat Congressman Jimmy Gomez was under investigation for allegations that he “engaged in sexual misconduct in violation of the Code of Official Conduct or any other applicable standard of conduct, including engaging in inappropriate sexual contact with a House staffer.”
Gomez, who is 51 and married, allegedly had an affair with a staffer who worked for another member and who later accused him of sexual harassment and sexual misconduct.
The Congressman released a statement claiming all his conduct was consensual and denying any wrongdoing, while implying the allegations of the affair were true.
“As I said when the existence of an inquiry was first reported two months ago in the media, years ago, I made personal mistakes outside my marriage. Although my actions were consensual in nature and haven’t violated the law or House Ethics rules, that doesn’t diminish the impact that these mistakes have made on those I care about the most,” Gomez stated.
“I take full responsibility and have committed myself to working through the pain privately with my wife and family. I sought professional assistance to help re-center and heal my relationships and move forward with honesty, transparency, and respect. I continue to do this work,” Gomez added.
The Accuser’s Lawyer Contradicts Gomez
Attorneys Lisa J. Banks and Sarah E. Nesbitt represent the accuser, and they dropped a bombshell with a letter revealing that the panel interviewed their client and that she contradicted his claims that all his actions were consensual.
“We represent one of the women who was interviewed by the House Committee on Ethics about her experience of sexual harassment and assault by Representative Jimmy Gomez,” Banks and Nesbitt’s statement read. “Contrary to Representative Gomez’s assertion in his statement, his actions were not ‘consensual in nature’ with respect to our client. We fully expect that the House Committee on Ethics will come to the same conclusion in its investigation.”
“This is just the latest example of brazen sexual misconduct by a member of Congress,” the lawyer went on to write. “Congress must act to rein in its members who seem to believe that preying on young women working on Capitol Hill is one of the perks of their job.”
Democrats could only shake their heads at the timing.
Control of Congress rests on a razor’s edge.
Any scandal that potentially puts a new seat in play scrambles both parties’ calculus for the midterms.
