Hollywood never gets tired of lecturing the rest of America about tolerance and open minds.
One actress with 25 years of credits found out what that tolerance is worth after typing a single comment.
And Selma Blair just stood at a podium in New York and described who vanished from her life within a day.
What Blair Told the Room at The Jewish Museum
Blair spoke at the Anti-Defamation League’s State of the Arts reception at The Jewish Museum in New York, according to Fox News Digital. She walked the crowd back to February 2024, in the middle of the Israel-Hamas war.
Back then she replied to an Instagram post from immigration reform advocate Abraham Hamra. Her targets were then-Representative Cori Bush (D-MO) and Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), who had voted against legislation barring people involved in the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel from entering the United States.
“Deport all these terrorist supporting goons,” Blair wrote in part, according to the Hollywood Reporter. She followed it with a broad swipe at Islam itself, then deleted the comment and apologized.
The apology bought her nothing.
“The brands I worked with were gone within a day,” Blair said. “A few partnerships I’d spent years building were shelved. My agency was gone. My lawyer was gone. My publicist was gone. My book agent was gone. My book publicist was gone. My social media manager was gone.”
“No one returned my calls.”
She told the audience she also lost friends and the payment tied to a Super Bowl advertisement. And she isn’t taking the apology back. “I meant it then, and I mean it now, and I’m leaving the comment there, because the comment was not the story,” Blair said.
The Price Her Son Paid
Blair is Jewish. She lives with multiple sclerosis, and she told the room her son had already watched her go through chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. Then he watched this.
“The fear got into me, and fear is contagious in a house,” she said.
“He’s a teenager now. He’s supposed to be embarrassed by me, not frightened for me. Careers come back. Years of his childhood do not.”
But Blair didn’t spend the whole night on her own story. She turned on a movie star she never named. Fox News Digital reported she was pointing at actor Javier Bardem’s petition calling for singer Pink’s removal as a UNICEF ambassador.
“Her crime was objecting, out loud, when another performer railed against Israel from a stage,” Blair said. “She didn’t ask for anyone to lose anything. Not a job, not a stage, nothing. She said what she thought.”
“And for saying what she thought, a movie star spent his week trying to get her canceled.”
Fox News Digital tied that other performer to rapper Macklemore, whom venues pushed off Ed Sheeran’s US tour following his anti-Israel remarks. Blair left his name out too.
Hollywood’s Blacklist Never Really Closed
Blair said herself that the comment offended people, and she apologized for it without conditions. Plenty of readers will think the sweeping line about an entire religion deserved an apology. But free speech has one working remedy for words people don’t like, and that remedy is more words.
Nobody in Blair’s professional circle argued with her. Nobody sat her down. An agency, a lawyer, a publicist, and a book agent simply disappeared, and the brands followed inside 24 hours.
NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck told Fox News Digital that “the elitist media and their friends in Hollywood have made perfectly clear that ‘Woke 1’ was never, actually dead.”
“It’s very much alive, and it’s ready to ruin anyone’s career at a moment’s notice,” Houck continued. “Especially if they deem to have the ‘wrong’ views about Israel and Islamists.”
It would be tidy to say the machine only chews up one side. The record is messier than that. TIME reported in 2023 that a major talent agency dropped an Oscar-winning actress and a studio fired the lead of a horror franchise over their commentary from the opposite side of the same war. And Macklemore’s lost tour slot belongs on that list too.
So the pattern isn’t really about which opinion a celebrity holds. It’s about an industry that answers every unwelcome sentence by making the speaker disappear, then turns around and lectures America about open minds.
And the same out-of-touch elites who run that industry wonder why the country stopped listening. Forbes reported that NBC’s Tonight Show audience fell 64% over a decade, from 3.6 million viewers to 1.3 million. Fox News reported CBS pulled the plug on The Late Show this year, a program that reportedly lost $40 million a year. Americans got tired of entertainers who preach and punish.
Blair’s sharpest point wasn’t about herself anyway. In the remarks the ADL published, she warned about the unknown performer with no name and no cushion: “One post, one wrong word, one true word, and the door shuts.” The ADL also released research at the event alleging the systemic exclusion of Jewish and Israeli artists across museums, entertainment, and publishing.
A star with a quarter century of credits can claw her way back. Blair has joined the cast of the upcoming film Schmoolie the Deathwatcher, and she announced a documentary about antisemitism titled Hineni, which she translated as “Here I am.”
“Antisemitism has to stop,” Blair told the audience. “Not be managed. Not be explained. Not be weighed against something else. Stop.”
But the young comic or songwriter who says the wrong thing next won’t get a podium in New York. Hollywood will erase that person quietly, and nobody will write a headline about it.
