Bill Maher has spent years saying things about Islam that Democrats refuse to touch.
One of the Left’s rising stars finally decided to make him pay for it.
And Bill Maher answered a Democrat Senate candidate’s ugly threat with one move nobody saw coming.
Abdul El-Sayed Told Chuck Todd He Wants to See Maher Get Whooped
Abdul El-Sayed is the Democrat candidate for US Senate in Michigan.
He sat down on September 25 with former NBC News host Chuck Todd for an interview on Noosphere, and Todd’s questions turned to which shows El-Sayed would agree to appear on.
Fox News reported that El-Sayed said he’d go on Maher’s show or Joe Rogan’s, even though he considers their beliefs “terrible,” because he wants to talk to their audiences.
Then he got to the part he really wanted to say.
“You know how many terrible things Bill Maher has said about people like me?” El-Sayed said. “Terrible, awful things. Of course, he’s still got his show on Comedy Central, and everybody seems to be perfectly okay going on that show despite the fact that he said deeply terrible things.”
Real Time airs on HBO, not Comedy Central. But the network mix-up was the least interesting thing El-Sayed said.
“But you know who else would go on that show?” he continued. “I would go on that show. You know why? A: I wanna give people the image of watching him get his a** whooped on his own show by a guy who prays like I do. And I’d also go on the show because I want to convince the people who watch his show, right, that a lot of the things that he says, just not viable.”
So the pitch from a man asking Michigan for a Senate seat boils down to a televised beatdown first and persuasion second.
Maher Called the Bluff on His Own Show
Maher didn’t flinch. And he didn’t apologize either.
He addressed El-Sayed directly on Real Time that same night and put an open invitation on the table.
“It’s not people like you, I would love to have you on, sir, by the way,” Maher said. “And I hope we can make that happen. I talk about Islam. It’s never personal, and it’s never about race. It’s about ideas. Religion is an opinion. That’s all religion is: a group of thoughts that form an opinion of something. I have different views on what, you know, how women should be treated and things like that, that we will discuss. I hope you will accept our invitation.”
Fox News Digital asked El-Sayed’s campaign and Maher’s representative for comment. Neither answered right away.
Maher is no friend of conservatives. He’s a Hollywood liberal who has taken plenty of cheap shots at President Trump and the people who voted for him, and nobody on the Right should mistake him for an ally.
But on this one question he has stayed put for years, and it drives the Left up the wall.
He treats a religion as a set of ideas. And ideas are open to criticism in America.
The Chest-Thumping Is Becoming a Habit
This wasn’t a one-off for El-Sayed.
In August, he challenged his Republican opponent, Mike Rogers, to a game of tackle football. Fox News noted that El-Sayed is more than 20 years younger than Rogers.
“Since you’re too afraid to debate me, how about you ‘hold me accountable’ on a football field instead,” El-Sayed wrote on X. “Tackle, no pads like we used to play when we were kids.”
Rogers brushed it off in September when Fox News correspondent Alexis McAdams asked him about it.
“I think that is so unserious,” Rogers said. “He wants to thump his chest and show how macho he is, and he spends a lot of time talking about high school. This is not about high school.”
A no-pads football game with a man two decades older. A promised whooping for a cable comedian. There’s a lot of swagger here for a guy whose party spent years lecturing the country about toxic masculinity.
“People Like Me” Is the Tell
The most revealing words in the whole exchange were “people like me.”
Maher criticized a belief system. El-Sayed heard an attack on a group of people, and that swap is how the Left shuts down an argument it doesn’t want to have.
Once criticizing an idea counts as attacking a person, the critic becomes a bigot. And the next step after “bigot” is always a demand that somebody take away the microphone.
El-Sayed got halfway there on his own. He complained that Maher “still” has a show and that guests seem “perfectly okay” going on it.
That complaint is the “hate speech” argument in miniature. Supporters of hate speech laws want to turn disfavored opinions about radical Islam, traditional values, and the pro-life cause into something punishable, and they always start by recasting an opinion as an injury.
The First Amendment doesn’t work that way. It protects blunt, even offensive, criticism of any religion, Christianity included, and the cure for speech somebody hates is more speech.
It’s worth remembering what sits on the other side of that principle. Classical Sharia jurisprudence treats blasphemy against Islam and apostasy as capital offenses, and several countries that enforce Sharia still carry those penalties on the books. No system like that can coexist with the US Constitution, and saying so is no knock on any individual Muslim’s private faith.
Fox News has also reported that El-Sayed faced a grilling over his own past statements on Sharia law. Maybe that’s why Maher’s needling stings so much.
And here’s the awkward part for El-Sayed. Maher just offered him exactly what he claimed to want.
But a challenge tossed out to a friendly interviewer is one thing, and sitting across from a host who has argued this subject for decades is another. Maher already previewed the topic, too. He plans to ask how women get treated.
If El-Sayed takes the seat, viewers get an actual argument about ideas, which is how this is supposed to work. If he ducks, the tough talk on Todd’s show was only ever talk.
