Joe Biden forced every man and woman in uniform to take a COVID-19 shot or lose their career.
Now the Trump administration is going back and asking the question nobody in power was willing to ask before.
And what Robert F Kennedy Jr and Pete Hegseth uncovered about those service members could rewrite the entire story of Biden’s military vaccine mandate.
The Investigation Nobody in Washington Wanted
An Army physician named Dr Theresa Long told a Virginia federal court in an August 14 deposition that Secretary of War Pete Hegseth selected her to serve as Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr’s senior medical military adviser.
That role had not been publicly known until the deposition surfaced.
Long is now examining 2,544 deaths among troops that were reported to HHS’ Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System — known as VAERS — to determine whether those deaths resulted from COVID-19 vaccines. The figures are currently unverified, meaning nobody has yet done the work of confirming or ruling out a vaccine connection.
She told the court she aims to complete her research on potential vaccine-related health complications “within a year.”
The Pentagon, when contacted for comment, referred reporters to HHS. HHS did not immediately respond.
Long is certified in aerospace medicine and holds a master’s degree in public health. She is not a fringe figure. She is a credentialed Army physician now operating at the highest levels of the federal health apparatus, tasked with answering a question that the Biden administration never wanted asked.
How Biden’s Mandate Wrecked Careers — and What Hegseth Is Doing About It
The mandate itself went into force on August 24, 2021, when the Secretary of Defense ordered all service members to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. It was eventually rescinded on January 10, 2023 — but not before thousands of troops paid the price.
President Donald Trump’s executive order, issued in January 2025, described the mandate plainly: “The vaccine mandate was an unfair, overbroad and completely unnecessary burden on our service members.”
That order directed the reinstatement of troops who had been discharged for refusing the shot.
Hegseth followed up in May 2026 by establishing the Department of War COVID-19 Reinstatement and Reconciliation Task Force. As of April 2026, nearly 170 service members had been reinstated or re-accessed, with more than 800 additional former troops having expressed interest in returning to service.
Those numbers tell their own story. Thousands of trained warriors were pushed out of the military they chose to serve, denied the right to make their own medical decisions, and in many cases stripped of the honorable discharges they earned. Hegseth called it exactly what it was: “You were mistreated by the Biden Pentagon, and we are fixing that injustice.”
And Hegseth’s record on military vaccine mandates is consistent. He previously called the military’s flu vaccine requirement an “absurd, overreaching mandate,” according to NPR reporting from June.
Kennedy’s position is equally clear. He pledged to “end covid vaccine mandates” in the United States and stated in an August 2025 post on X that his “job” as health secretary is to “restore trust in the vaccine program so that parents know we’re telling them the truth.”
That’s not the language of someone trying to abolish public health. That’s the language of someone who understands that trust, once broken by coercion, doesn’t come back on its own.
What the Pentagon’s Own Data Already Shows
A March 2026 Pentagon report found that myocarditis and pericarditis — inflammation of the heart and surrounding tissue — increased in the short term following COVID vaccination among active-duty personnel. The report noted the increase was not sustained over a one-year period, but the short-term spike is documented.
The FDA has also required updated warning labels for mRNA COVID vaccines specifically addressing myocarditis and pericarditis risks. The agency reported a higher incidence among young men — 27 cases per million vaccinations, compared with 8 per million in the general population for the period it analyzed.
Young men. The exact demographic that makes up the backbone of the American military.
None of that proves the 2,544 VAERS-reported deaths were caused by the vaccine. VAERS is a reporting system, not a verdict. A report to VAERS documents that a health event occurred after vaccination — it does not establish causation. Long herself is working to determine whether a causal link exists, and that work is ongoing.
But the fact that those reports exist, that nobody in the Biden administration bothered to investigate them seriously, and that it took a change in administration to even ask the question — that says something.
The Bigger Picture the Establishment Doesn’t Want Discussed
The COVID-era mandate on military personnel was not a close call. It was a blunt-force order that gave service members a choice between their bodily autonomy and their careers. Religious exemption requests were denied at staggering rates. Medical exemptions were treated with suspicion. Troops who had given years of their lives to the country were handed general discharges instead of honorable ones for the offense of declining a shot.
And throughout all of it, the public health establishment insisted the science was settled, the mandate was necessary, and anyone raising questions was dangerous.
But the questions were always legitimate. Informed consent is not a fringe concept — it is the foundation of medical ethics. Bodily autonomy does not disappear when someone puts on a uniform. The idea that a service member forfeits the right to ask what is being injected into their body is not a medical position. It is a political one.
Kennedy and Hegseth are not trying to tear down the military or the public health system. They are doing what the previous administration refused to do: look at the data, follow it honestly, and give the men and women who served an answer they deserve.
The deposition that surfaced from Dr Theresa Long’s August 14 testimony is the first public confirmation that this investigation is actively underway at the highest levels of both the Defense Department and HHS. Her role had not been previously reported. The fact that it emerged through a federal court proceeding — an ongoing lawsuit involving former Defense Department health official Terry Adirim — rather than through a press release tells you something about how carefully this work is being done.
But it is being done. And when Long completes her research, the American people will finally have answers about what happened to those 2,544 troops whose deaths were reported to VAERS and then quietly left on a shelf while the people who ordered the mandate moved on.
The MAHA movement has always argued that the public health bureaucracy needs accountability, not deference. This investigation is accountability. It may be uncomfortable for the people who designed and enforced Biden’s military vaccine mandate. That discomfort is the point.
The service members who were discharged, denied bonuses, stripped of their honorable discharges, and told their concerns didn’t matter — they waited a long time for someone in Washington to take their side. Kennedy and Hegseth are taking it now.
