Ron DeSantis Opposes Flock Cameras
Flock pitched their spy cameras to local communities as a tool police can use to track criminals by reading license plates.
But they quickly became a tool for abuse.
One Kentucky police officer was arrested for using Flock cameras to track his ex-girlfriend over 2,000 times.
Flock cameras popped up at the entrance to the Eagle Sports Range in Cudahy, Wisconsin, leading to fears that the government is using the cameras to track the license plates of gun owners to create a firearms database.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis expressed his opposition to Flock cameras at a press conference.
“Now, I’ve never supported the automatic tickets being sent if you’re speeding. I think a human being has to do that, and so I’ve never — I’ve never embraced that. But this was something that was kind of out there in that vein, and then with this whole Flock situation, it’s now being used… not for tolling by plate or things like that, but for actual criminal surveillance,” DeSantis began.
DeSantis reminded Floridians of his strong support for law enforcement, but worried that Flock cameras were pushing America towards a 1984-style surveillance state.
“I think that’s important that we do that, and no one’s been stronger on law enforcement than me. But I don’t want to have this become a surveillance state. I don’t want there to be a situation — and that’s why we wanted an AI bill of rights,” DeSantis added.
Why Conservatives Oppose Flock Cameras
DeSantis admitted he worried that Flock cameras were another step towards a creeping AI takeover of society.
“Remember, we were pushing for that because the Flock is artificial intelligence, so whether it’s online with digital surveillance or whether it’s with cameras, at what point are we just going to be free to be not have to deal with any of that?” DeSantis wondered.
DeSantis also expressed concern about the speed with which Flock cameras became an ever-present fact of life.
“But this has happened very quickly. I mean, this is in the last few years. I mean, I think when I became governor, they had readers, but it was more to toll people going through the service plazas and the toll plazas, which you know, honestly we had a lot of toll roads when I became governor, and I wish we didn’t have that many toll roads because you do a lot,” he said. “That’s why we did the toll relief here in Florida,” DeSantis continued.
Conservatives worry that Flock cameras will turn into a tool Democrats use to oppress them.
Had Flock cameras been around during the pandemic, there is little doubt Democrat states would have used them to track Americans who ignored lockdown rules and gathered with more friends and family than Dr. Fauci declared was allowed.
Flock cameras could also track movements of political opposition to Democrats, so blue states could monitor activists gathering to plot strategy on how to mobilize against the left’s socialist agenda.
Many Americans see Flock cameras as a dystopian nightmare, which is why opposition is growing by the day.
