Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spent years as the face of the Democratic Socialists of America.
Turns out she was hiding a secret.
And the moment she quietly rejoined — right as a presidential run comes into focus — is raising eyebrows even inside the socialist Left.
What Actually Happened With the Membership
In 2018, then-first-time congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez signed up for an annual membership with the Democratic Socialists of America. Her annual membership expired in 2019, and she apparently never renewed it.
The organization congratulated her as “DSA member @AOC” in an X post on her 2020 reelection and commended her as a “member” for a 2024 vote against a TikTok ban. Seven years of calling her a member. Seven years of not checking whether she’d actually paid dues.
DSA discovered the lapse after Ocasio-Cortez recently described herself as a member of its New York City chapter but not the national organization, prompting DSA leaders to review her membership status, City & State reported.
That’s the part that doesn’t quite add up. She went on ABC’s *This Week* and told host Jon Karl she was a member of the New York City chapter but not the national organization. This answer perplexed her comrades, since it is not possible to be a member of a local DSA chapter but not the national organization.
When Ocasio-Cortez first joined DSA, annual memberships had to be manually renewed each year. The organization has since moved to automatic renewals. So the explanation is basically that she forgot to mail in the paperwork back in 2019 and nobody noticed for seven years. Sure.
The DSA announced: “Democratic Socialists of America confirms Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a member in good standing of our organization, having recently rejoined in August 2026. Previously, the representative joined DSA in 2018 with a one-year membership, which DSA’s national leadership recently noticed had lapsed, in 2019. She has since renewed her membership as of this month.”
Ocasio-Cortez’s office did not respond to a request for comment when reached by Fox News Digital.
The Timing Is Not Exactly Subtle
The New York congresswoman, widely viewed as a potential 2028 presidential contender, rejoined DSA this month as the group builds momentum from a string of Democratic primary victories, including over several incumbents.
And the socialist base noticed. “I’m sorry but I’m not buying this,” one socialist X user wrote. “She’s just now realizing this? Coincidentally when DSA has grown in popularity and shown its organizing power? Just so happens to be the same time she’s contemplating running for president too? Very, very, very convenient.”
That’s the Left eating its own, by the way — not conservatives raising the point. The people who built the DSA into a national force are the ones questioning whether Ocasio-Cortez is using the organization as a campaign prop.
Despite Ocasio-Cortez’s longstanding ties to DSA, The Washington Post reported earlier this month that the organization was divided over whether and how to make a 2028 presidential endorsement, with Ocasio-Cortez at the center of the debate.
Others piled on with a different kind of humor. “In the 50s, a running joke in communist circles was that everyone knew who the FBI agents were: they were the only ones who always paid their membership dues on time,” author Byrne Hobart posted. “Inexcusable for a DSA member to pay rent,” economist Wojtek Kopczuk said.
Washington Post columnist Megan McArdle posted on X: “This is LOL in a gently humorous way rather than LOL in a mean way. Could definitely have happened to me.”
But what happened to Megan McArdle and what happened to the loudest socialist in Congress are not quite the same story.
The Bigger Picture: A Marxist Platform She Can’t Fully Disown
The DSA’s own published platform is worth understanding before taking any of Ocasio-Cortez’s distancing moves at face value. The organization openly calls for government seizure of major corporations, abolishing the US Senate, replacing the Presidency and Supreme Court with bodies subordinate to Congress, granting amnesty to all illegal aliens in the country, and abolishing the police and prison system. These are not fringe positions floated by some rogue chapter. They are in the national program.
When Karl pressed Ocasio-Cortez on that platform during the ABC interview, she replied, “No, but I think that this is a free country.” She said people were free to organize around those ideas but that her responsibility as an elected official was to focus on healthcare and lowering costs for Americans.
She also tried to laugh off the broader record of socialist excess. “I have a local city councilman that has this saying, ‘Woke 1 was crazy,'” Ocasio-Cortez said laughing, adding, “And I think that what’s important is that we have to assess what a candidate is saying now.”
That line came while she was being asked about Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong, who had made controversial comments such as calling for Thanksgiving to be canceled or for prisons to be abolished, and who has sought to backtrack on some of her past views as she seeks the Democratic nomination in her state.
But Ocasio-Cortez’s own 2018 campaign platform included Medicare for All, abolishing ICE, and sweeping Green New Deal-style climate mandates. The “Woke 1 was crazy” line works as a punchline right up until someone pulls up her own record. Government-run healthcare would gut patient choice, create rationing, and shift power over American medical decisions to federal bureaucrats — and Ocasio-Cortez championed all of it. The Green New Deal would have raised energy costs for every working family in the country while doing nothing measurable about global emissions, since Communist China and India face no equivalent restrictions. None of that was crazy to her at the time.
And the DSA’s current platform — the one she now claims not to fully endorse — calls for exactly the kind of government seizure of corporations and abolition of constitutional institutions that Marxist movements have pursued everywhere they’ve taken power. Every country that has gone down that road produced the same results: economic decline, authoritarian drift, and the destruction of the middle class. The DSA’s program is not a fresh idea. It is a recycled one with a very well-documented track record.
But she rejoined anyway. Because the organization is growing. Because DSA-backed candidates are winning primaries. Because the presidential polling has her name at the top. DSA had previously withdrawn its endorsement of her 2024 House campaign before conditionally reinstating its support, pointing to Ocasio-Cortez’s vote for a resolution that equated the “denial of Israel’s right to exist” with a form of antisemitism. The relationship has never been clean. It has always been transactional.
What the membership renewal actually tells you is that she needs the DSA’s organizing infrastructure for 2028 more than she needs to keep pretending she’s not part of it. The dues lapse was politically convenient when the organization was a liability. Rejoining is politically convenient now that it’s an asset. The DSA itself acknowledged: “While it is atypical for DSA to address the membership status of individuals, ongoing discussions about the 2028 presidential campaign have prompted this release.”
That’s the organization admitting out loud that this is about the presidential race. Not about ideology. Not about principle. About positioning.
The DSA’s platform calls for abolishing the US Senate — the same body Ocasio-Cortez would need to work with as president. It calls for granting amnesty to every illegal alien in the country, which would function as a scheme to permanently alter the American electorate by importing a new voter base. It calls for government seizure of major corporations, which would end the free-market system that built the prosperity the American working class depends on. These are not academic debates. They are proposals with real consequences, and Ocasio-Cortez has spent years as the organization’s most famous face.
And now she wants credit for paying her dues again.
The socialist Left isn’t buying it. Ordinary Americans watching a potential presidential candidate scramble to paper over a seven-year gap in her own ideological membership shouldn’t buy it either.
