The Democrat Party is tearing itself apart in slow motion, and the establishment finally noticed.
But the people sounding the alarm are the same ones who spent years looking the other way while it grew.
And now, with the openly Marxist Democratic Socialists of America racking up primary wins in swing states, the centrist wing is promising a war it probably can’t win.
Michigan Was the Wake-Up Call They Chose to Ignore
Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed beat establishment Democrat Representative Haley Stevens (D-MI) in the Democrat primary in Michigan, where “the radical transformation of the Democratic Party is center stage,” according to Breitbart News.
El-Sayed, a public health official and former failed candidate for governor in 2018, delivered the most high-profile win to date for the movement increasingly calling the shots in Democrat politics. While he is not a formal member of the Democratic Socialists of America, elected officials identifying as democratic socialists, including Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), campaigned hard for him over several months leading up to the primary.
Michigan was hardly the only sign of progressive momentum. Democrat voters recently elected socialist Janeese Lewis George as mayor of the District of Columbia, while DSA-backed Los Angeles City Councilwoman Nithya Raman advanced to the general election in the city’s mayoral race.
So the self-described moderates now want to spend money. Big money.
Jonathan Cowan, the president of Third Way, a leading centrist Democrat group, told the New York Times about a new $15 million effort between now and 2028 to discredit democratic socialism, saying: “We are preparing for the next war that is coming.”
The group plans to target the Democratic Socialists of America movement, which Cowan believes poses a “mortal danger” for Democrats. He said the effort would include opposition research into DSA, polling, social media programs, and educating Democrat activists and leaders.
Cowan added, “It is deeply troubling to see radical, far-left candidates winning in places that are potentially presidential swing states.”
But here’s the thing. Third Way and groups like it spent years accommodating the left’s march through the party. They cheered when Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez won her first primary. They stayed quiet when socialist mayors started winning in major American cities. Now they want credit for drawing a line.
Their fear is that El-Sayed was paving a path for a progressive to seize the party’s presidential nomination in 2028 and then go on to lose the general election.
What the DSA Actually Wants
Worth pausing here to be clear about who these centrists are supposedly fighting. The DSA is not a harmless progressive faction pushing for slightly higher taxes. The DSA’s own platform calls for expanding the House of Representatives, implementing proportional representation and ranked choice voting in all elections, abolishing the Senate, and establishing public ownership of the largest corporations and essential industries.
The platform’s language calls for replacing the President and Supreme Court with an executive and judiciary chosen by and subordinate to Congress. That is not progressivism. That is the dismantling of the constitutional republic, dressed up in academic language.
The DSA’s platform calls for ownership of private corporations, free public college, rent control, state-run healthcare, reparations for slavery, and amnesty for people in the country illegally. Additionally, it looks to abolish ICE, prisons, the Supreme Court, and the Senate.
DSA membership has grown from about 24,000 in 2017 to more than 120,000 today. That growth did not happen in a vacuum. It happened while establishment Democrats like Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi were busy cutting deals with the far left to hold their caucus together.
Every country that has tried the DSA’s version of government seizure of corporations and central planning of the economy has produced the same results: shortages, collapsing living standards, authoritarian drift, and a shrinking middle class. Venezuela. Cuba. The Soviet Union. The names change but the outcome does not. The DSA’s rebranding of these ideas as “democratic socialism” does not change what the ideas are or where they lead.
Fetterman Plays Both Sides, and Carville Threatens to Walk
Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) has been one of the louder voices warning his party about this drift. But voters should understand exactly what Fetterman is doing here. He is pretending to be a Trump supporter because he is up for re-election in a red state in 2028. His voting record tells a different story. Fetterman supports federally protecting abortion access, including codifying Roe v. Wade into law, and has joined Senate Democrats in introducing legislation to guarantee nationwide abortion access, describing a woman’s right to make such decisions as sacred and non-negotiable. He is a reliable Democrat vote who supports abortion on demand, and no amount of tough talk about communists changes that.
Still, even his performance is worth noting for what it reveals about how far left the party has gone. Fetterman recently warned against figures such as socialist streamer Hasan Piker, telling Fox News Digital: “I would never try to elevate… a communist just because [Piker] has followers on some, on Twitch, whatever that is. But overall, if you identify with a communist who praises Mao and Cuba and for these places, that should be foreign to any Democrat. Without a doubt, that’s having an impact.”
Piker has emerged as an influential voice on the Democrat left, backing socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and campaigning alongside Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed as left-wing candidates court his millions of online followers.
Democrat strategist James Carville pledged to leave the Democrat Party if far-left streamer Hasan Piker becomes a leading voice in it, arguing that an “overwhelming majority” of Democrats agree. “I am not going to be in the same party with Hasan Piker,” he said. “If he becomes a force in a Democratic Party, I’m out of here. I have no intention of ever being in the same political party with that guy.”
Carville has been a reliable Democrat operative for nearly five decades. The fact that he is now threatening to walk is not a sign of his principles. It is a sign of how thoroughly the openly Marxist DSA has captured the party’s grassroots energy, its youth organizing infrastructure, and its primary machinery.
Carville himself pointed directly to the DSA’s agenda, saying: “this idea that we’re going to seize the means of production — just go look at the DSA’s platform. You don’t have to look any further than that.”
And Welcome PAC founder Liam Kerr, another self-described centrist now sounding the alarm, acknowledged the structural problem his own side helped create. “The upside of being associated with more extreme movements is you get attention and real and perceived energy and outsider status,” Kerr said.
That is a polite way of admitting that the left built something the centrists never bothered to match.
What This Actually Means Going Forward
Third Way’s $15 million is a rounding error compared to what the DSA’s organizing machine has built over the past decade. Third Way is planning to fund public opinion research, opposition research, digital advertising, and outreach to activists and influential party figures to counter the DSA’s growing influence and prevent it from becoming synonymous with the Democrat Party’s brand. But the DSA already has 120,000 dues-paying members, an established presence in major city governments, and a presidential candidate pipeline that just demonstrated it can win Senate primaries in Midwestern swing states.
The centrist Democrats warning about all of this are not wrong about the threat. They are just the wrong messengers. The embattled establishment of the Democrat Party searched furiously for a political reset after El-Sayed’s progressive victory in Michigan. Some strategists urgently pressed to adopt a sharper edge to tap into the fury among Democrat voters that was felling its centrist candidates. Others wanted to attack democratic socialism, undercutting a budding movement now set to have far more than a toehold in the next Congress.
But the DSA’s platform calls for abolishing the Senate, seizing private corporations, ending ICE, opening the borders, and replacing the Presidency and Supreme Court with bodies subordinate to Congress. These are not fringe demands being whispered in back rooms. They are written down in the DSA’s official platform, endorsed by elected officials, and cheered at campaign rallies in Michigan and New York City. The people who want to dismantle the constitutional republic are not hiding anymore.
For Americans who believe in free enterprise, limited government, individual liberty, and the Christian values that built this country, the Democrat Party’s internal fight is less a reason for comfort than a reminder of what is at stake. The Marxists did not take over the party overnight. They built something, precinct by precinct, primary by primary, while the establishment was busy congratulating itself on being reasonable.
Third Way is now spending $15 million to fight a movement that has already won the argument inside the Democrat Party’s activist base. That is not a rescue operation. That is a very expensive acknowledgment that they lost.
